The Opportunity

As a Senior Project Accountant, you will have the opportunity to collaborate across business units by playing a pivotal role through the monitoring and accounting of strategic transformational projects. As a newly created role, you will help provide valuable insight by completing financial reporting and forecasting activities to ensure business decisions are well informed. The role reports to the Leader, Financial Sustainability with the primary focus on internally generated intangible assets and supporting the budgeting, forecasting and analysis of costs in various other areas.

You will need to be comfortable with getting the numbers right, using your attention to detail and strong knowledge of accounting standards for capital projects. Equally important, your analytical and influencing skills will allow you to become a key member of the project team, explaining your insights and recommendations to non-finance decision makers.

As a Senior Project Accountant, you will:

  • Analyze and interpret financial data and/or reports to provide financial assistance to departments, working groups and senior management to ensure sound business decisions are made throughout the organization in accordance with the strategic plan, stewarding sustainability of the organization.
  • Partner with project managers to identify and deliver individual project financial reporting needs, including creating and developing models for project forecasting, project budgeting, project costing, internal resource allocation with a strong focus on ERP project accounting, internally generated information technology intangible assets and related hardware components.
  • Develop and present financial models for budgeting, forecasting, trending, and analysis of both revenues and expenses, ensuring decisions are based on sound business principals
  • Take historic and forecasted financial information and models to estimate value creation through strategic initiatives.
  • Critically consider and recommend alternative approaches and processes to identify value creation through changes in business transformation projects to qualitatively and quantifiably increase the value of the underlying projects with a strong focus on information technology transformation.
  • Work with the project managers to identify, track and deliver reporting needs to ensure project expenditures are being recorded and presented in accordance to support reporting and Canadian GAAP requirements.
  • Support in the development and implementation of business cases, proposals, contracts, business process improvements and initiatives by providing assessment, advice, analysis and recommendations to assist in the achievement of business objectives consistent with the strategic plan and with budgets.
  • Perform financial analysis for major tangible and intangible capital expenditures by preparing analytics to assist with financial negotiations with internal stakeholders and budget holders.
  • Support and provide guidance to Corporate Financial Analysts to share knowledge and ensure project financials are incorporated appropriately into the organization-wide projections.
  • Prepare supporting documentation and respond to external audit enquiries related to areas of responsibility.
  • Continually seek improvement opportunities over procedures and processes to strengthen internal controls and implement efficiencies.
  • Support the preparation of complex monthly journal entries and related working papers, in areas of responsibility.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have:

  • University degree in Business, Accounting or equivalent.
  • CPA designation or equivalent.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in senior financial or analytical position, preferably in a medium to large-sized company.
  • Considerable experience in developing, implementing, monitoring and interpreting project parameters, including cost projections.
  • Sound knowledge ASNPO and ASPE, including capitalization of expenditures related to internally generated intangible assets.
  • Strong proficiency in office and accounting software including MS Office, Great
  • Plains Dynamics, Adaptive Insights, including considerable experience working with complex spreadsheet applications.
  • An ability to learn new systems and to provide trouble-shooting support.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to groups, at all levels in the organization, with varied levels of financial knowledge.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
