How to Build a LinkedIn Headline

A LinkedIn headline is the first thing that anyone will see on your LinkedIn profile (besides any images!). It represents who you are and what you do.

Although it sounds simple to write who you are and what you do right there in the headline, it is not as easy as you think. Think about it, if you were to use a generic headline like “Business Analyst at X company”, there are millions of LinkedIn users who have an exact same position as you.

A LinkedIn headline should be something that grabs attention and invites others to visit your profile. We will discover how to write an impactful LinkedIn headline that will increase your profile’s credibility!

Know yourself first

Before you start writing a headline, ask yourself a few questions. These questions will help you better understand yourself and how you should be presenting yourself.

  • Who are you?
  • Who do you help?
  • How do you help?
  • What is your industry?
  • Keywords of ideal positions
  • What can you add to be catchy?

Pick your niche and show your values

A LinkedIn profile is not a replication of your resume, you can have more fun with it! Unlike the typical LinkedIn headline of title name @ company name, you can take it up a nodge. Your headline should give the audience an immediate understanding of what type of a person you are and what value you can deliver.

A good headline includes your area of expertise, show to the audience what you have to offer, and current title & company (if preferred).

In your job search, you can leverage your headline to spice up your personal branding as well. You do not need to limit the LinkedIn headline to be only your current position, it can also be what you are experts in, what you have to offer to the employers, and who you aspire to be.
